Craft Nalbinding

New Publication: Loops in Time: Nalbinding – Oslo and Fåberg Stitches Hat

The WICI Association is pleased to announce a new publication dedicated to one of the oldest textile techniques still practiced today — nalbinding. Written by Anna Kępa, educator, craft practitioner, and promoter of traditional textile crafts, this practical guide introduces readers to the fundamentals of nalbinding through two beginner-friendly stitches: Oslo and Fåberg.

What Is Nalbinding?

Nalbinding is a textile technique that uses a single needle and short lengths of yarn to create a dense, durable fabric. Archaeological finds show that it was practiced across a wide geographical area, from Scandinavia and the Middle East to South America.

Unlike knitting or crochet, nalbinding does not easily unravel. Each loop is worked through the entire length of the yarn, creating a strong structure that has been valued for centuries in the production of hats, mittens, and socks.

Today, the technique is experiencing renewed interest among historical crafts enthusiasts, reenactors, and modern makers looking for sustainable and durable textile techniques.

About the Book

Loops in Time: Nalbinding – Oslo and Fåberg Stitches Hat is designed as a practical learning guide for beginners. Rather than presenting an academic overview of the technique, the publication focuses on learning through practice.

Readers are guided step by step through the construction of two popular nalbinding stitches and the process of making a hat. The book combines written instructions, illustrations, pattern charts, and video tutorials to support different learning styles.
